The 2021 edition of the World Series of Poker is just around the corner, and many people are already in Las Vegas, making final preparations for the grand beginning. Just like previous years (not counting 2020), the biggest real money poker festival in the world will take place in Rio Las Vegas.
Organizers have plenty of bumps on the road, as there are still many Covid-19 restrictions in case. Let’s see how the 2021 version will be different from what we’re used to.
It Takes Place in the Fall
WSOP traditionally takes place in July and August. However, it wasn’t certain whether the 2021 edition would take place at all due to the Covid-19 pandemic. As the vaccination rate started increasing, it became certain that WSOP would happen, but July seemed too early at that point, which is why it was moved to the end of September and October.
Does this mean that future WSOP tournaments will also happen in the fall? Probably no. As soon as the Covid-19 pandemic is over, the festival will likely return to its original schedule and take place in July and August.
Proof of Vaccination
It’s decided that all participants who want to visit Rio and play WSOP bracelet events need to be vaccinated and submit their vaccination status when applying for the festival. They only need to show vaccination proof one time so that the system can recognize them as vaccinated.
Players from the US can even use a free mobile app that has the Health Pass feature where they can quickly upload their vaccination cards as proof. If you’re outside the US, you will have to submit your country-specific proof of vaccination when visiting the Belize room to register for the tournament.
Last Time in Rio
Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino has traditionally been the home of the World Series of Poker. However, there have been plenty of rumors lately that WSOP will move to Bally’s next year.
The room started after a Facebook update from the Valley National 8-Ball League Association. The post claims that VNLA’s contract was canceled as Bally was interested in hosting the World Series of Poker starting 2022 and beyond.
Many New Events
Every WSOP festival features new and exciting events, and this one is no exception. For example, players will have a chance to take part in the $500 The Reunion tournament that features $5 million in guaranteed prizes and starts on October 1. More than 10,000 participants are expected to take part in this event.
Another interesting event will be the $25,000 Heads Up No Limit Hold’em Championship, where 64 players will compete for the first prize in a heads-up format. This event will take place on October 5.
Poker Hall of Fame Bounty is yet another new addition to WSOP. It will start on November 17 and will pay homage to the Poker Hall of Fame, which was founded in 1979. All living HoF members will be invited to take part in this event. Moreover, participants will have a bounty that corresponds to the year they were introduced to the Poker Hall of Fame.
