Borgata is once again kicking off another year with some great action as the Winter Poker Open was recently held, and it was a massive success. The three week festival handed out over $12 million in cash prizes that was spread out among the 22 events that were held.
Poker players were eligible to enter any number of contests if they paid the buy-in, but there were some events that attracted more competitors than the rest. The $5,300 Championship Event was the biggest tournament that was held during the festival, and it was Alex Queen that was able to take the massive top prize.
There were nearly 700 entries for this event, and the prize pool that was split up got all the way up to $3.34 million. Queen was able to navigate a very difficult field to walk away with $613,063 to solidify himself as one of the best poker players at this event.
The local professional from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania was able to hold on for the win against a final table that included some big names. Winning the massive prize is the goal for every player in each tournament, but there were other players that got a big payday as well.
Great Final Table Action
Queen did have to make some big moves at the final table, although he did get to that stage with the second most chips of his own. There were some decorated pros looking to take home the biggest prize, including players such as John Pannucci and Brian Yoon.
Most of the players at the final table seemed to play things safe for the first few hands, but things heated up when three players got involved. Queen was able to take the chips lead by challenging Pannucci in a pot that also had Anthony Zinno involved.
The pair of aces was able to get Queen the big win, and he never let up the chip lead from that moment moving forward. There were some tough battles between him and Pannucci in heads up play, but it didn’t last long before the champion was crowned.
Pannucci was still able to bring home nearly $430,000 for his second place finish, but everyone will remember the play from Queen in this event. The final table at this main event showcased some of the top poker in this part of the country.
Other Big Paydays
Borgata did a great job of bookending the Winter Poker Open as nearly $500,000 was handed out to the winner of the $800 Kick Off Deepstack Event. Nicholas Funaro kicked off the action by picking up a win at that event, but the great poker tournaments were just getting started.
There were a number of smaller events that took place throughout the event as everyone was seemingly waiting for the biggest prize pools. In total, there were five tournaments that had over 1,300 entries, showing Borgata that this event was highly successful.
